- To build momentum for national action addressing poverty in America in 2009 and beyond, a group of foundations created the “Spotlight on Poverty Project,” which has developed an extensive Web site (www.spotlightonpoverty.org) featuring the views of presidential candidates, as well as current press coverage, commentary, recent reports and data on poverty and opportunity. A special section of the site called “Research” includes key reports and analysis focused on poverty.
- WSI and Public/Private Ventures collaborate to run a leadership institute to strengthen, sustain and grow the sector employment development field. Information about the Sector Skills Academy, as well lists of past and current Fellows and information about applying is available at www.sectorskillsacademy.org.
- WSI's research and work with various sector or industry-specific workforce development programs occasionally is spotlighted in the media. Recent articles include: “Building a Career Path Where There Was Just a Dead End," The Washington Post; How Important Is Occupational Skills Training?" The (New London, Conn.) Day; "Training/Study Charts Benefits of Targeted Programs," The Boston Globe; and "Business-community partners target skills gap, worker shortages," HR Briefing.
- In September 2002, one of WSI's sister programs at the Aspen Institute, the Domestic Strategy Group, released Grow Faster Together. Or Grow Slowly Apart. How Will America Work in the 21st Century?, a report detailing the anticipated worker gap, wage gap and skills gap facing the U.S. labor force in the coming years. This publication provides an interesting backdrop for WSI research. Copies can be downloaded free as a PDF file.
- Several national foundations have come together to focus attention on a key strategy for achieving worker success and business prosperity in the 21st Century. Their efforts have culminated in a Web site, www.opportunitiesatwork.org, which serves as a clearinghouse of innovative workforce development programs and research.
- The National Network of Sector Partners (www.nedlc.org/nnsp) is a membership organization that provides information and resources to industry-specific workforce development programs. In that way, NNSP serves as a trade association, providing training and networking opportunities, conferences, workshops, newsletters, policy alerts, technical assistance to those implementing programs and access to an on-line clearinghouse for information on the field. NNSP is a project of the National Economic Development and Law Center, based in Oakland, Calif.
- The SectorStrategies.org Knowledge Exchange (www.sectorstrategies.org), a joint project of the National Governors Association, the Corporation for a Skilled Workforce and the National Network of Sector Partners, is an Internet-based resource site designed to provide policy makers and sector leaders with the tools to design and implement sector policy. The site provides opportunities to participate in Webinars with state policy makers, and access research and reports on policy related to sector work. It is planned that the site will eventually offer a mechanism for dialogue among policy makers and experienced sector leaders.
- Companies and organizations that are achieving competitive advantage through community investment are showcased on the Web site, www.winwinpartner.com, which was created as part of the Ford Foundation's "Corporate Involvement Initiative." This site includes hyperlinks to resources, reports, case studies and more.
