Construction Sector Census
As policymakers seek ways to stimulate the U.S. economy and encourage the creation of more "green jobs," information is needed on the capacity of the workforce system to prepare individuals - particularly low-income and minority jobseekers - for these opportunities.
To fill that void, WSI developed a "census" of entry-level training and placement programs in the construction field (often referred to as pre-apprentice programs), which was designed to capture information about program size, location, services offered, populations served, etc. Information was captured through an on-line survey targeted at workforce development practitioners and education providers in the construction field. This survey is now closed.
This project, funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, will result in a report that should inform discussions about the need for investment in skills training, and how to ensure that apprenticeships and construction-related jobs are open to more low-income, minority and women candidates. In addition, the results of this project may help advance sharing and learning among workforce development practitioners in the construction sector.
